How to Pack a House Room by Room (2026 Guide)
A practical, room-by-room packing guide — the right supplies, how to protect fragile items, and the labeling system that makes unpacking painless.
Packing is the most time-consuming part of any move. Done well, it protects your belongings and makes unpacking fast. Done poorly, it leads to broken dishes and weeks of living out of unlabeled boxes. Whether you are packing up a home in DFW, Austin, or Houston, here is how to do it right. Gather the right supplies first
Heavy items go in small boxes; light, bulky items go in large boxes. A box you cannot lift is a box that will break.
The labeling system that saves you
Label every box on the top and at least one side with the destination room and a short contents note. Number your boxes and keep a master list. Mark fragile boxes clearly. Color-coding by room (a colored sticker per room) makes it obvious where everything goes on the other end.
Kitchen
The kitchen is the hardest room. Use dish-pack boxes with cell dividers for glasses and stemware. Wrap each plate in paper and pack plates on their edge, not flat. Nest bowls with paper between them. Seal and bag anything liquid.
Bedrooms and closets
Use wardrobe boxes to move hanging clothes straight from the closet. Pack books in small boxes so they stay liftable. Keep bedding in clearly labeled boxes so you can make beds the first night.
Living room and electronics
Photograph the back of your TV and components before unplugging so reconnecting is easy. Use original boxes for electronics if you have them; otherwise use TV and electronics boxes with plenty of padding. Wrap framed art and mirrors in mirror boxes.
Bathroom
Pack toiletries upright and bag anything that can leak. Keep a separate bag of daily essentials so you are not digging through boxes the first morning.
Fragile and valuable items
