Tipping Movers in Texas: A 2026 Etiquette Guide

Should you tip your movers, and how much? Here's the straightforward answer, plus other ways to show appreciation for a great crew.

Tipping movers is one of the most common questions we get, and there is no legal requirement — but it is a customary and appreciated way to recognize a crew that worked hard for you. Whether your crew is in Dallas, Austin, or Houston, here is a clear guide. (Wondering what the move itself costs? Run our moving cost calculator.)

Should you tip movers?

Tipping is optional but customary for good service, much like tipping in a restaurant. Moving is demanding physical work, and a great crew that protects your belongings and stays positive through a long day earns it. If the service was poor, you are not obligated.

How much to tip

There are two common approaches:

  • Percentage: roughly 10–20% of the total moving bill, split among the crew, for excellent service.
  • Flat per-mover: a common range is $20–$60 per mover depending on the size and difficulty of the job and how long it took.

  • For a half-day local move, many customers tip around $20–$40 per mover. For a long, full-day move with stairs, heavy items, or extreme heat, the higher end (or more) is appropriate.

When difficulty should bump the tip

  • Lots of stairs or a long carry from the truck.
  • Heavy specialty items handled carefully (pianos, safes) — see our specialty item moving guide.
  • Brutal Texas summer heat (Houston humidity definitely counts).
  • A crew that went above and beyond to protect or problem-solve.

    How to hand it out

Tip each mover directly if you can, or hand the lead mover the total and ask them to split it. Cash is most appreciated, though many crews can accept digital tips too. Tip at the end, once everything is delivered and placed.

    Other ways to show appreciation

  • Provide cold water and snacks, especially in summer — it genuinely helps.
  • Clear a path and have things ready so the crew can work efficiently.
  • Leave an honest online review; it means a lot to a local, family-owned company.

  • Experience the service worth tipping for
