The Ultimate Moving Checklist: An 8-Week Timeline (2026)

A week-by-week moving checklist that keeps your DFW or Austin move on track — from eight weeks out to moving day and beyond.

A move feels overwhelming when you try to do everything at once. Break it into weekly chunks and it becomes manageable. Whether you are settling into the DFW Metroplex, greater Austin, or the Houston area, here is the timeline our crews wish every customer followed. Pro tip: kick things off by running our moving cost calculator so the budget is set from day one.

8 weeks out

  • Create a moving binder or folder (digital or paper) for quotes, receipts, and lists.
  • Research and book your moving company — good crews fill up fast, especially in summer.
  • Start decluttering room by room. Donate, sell, or toss what you will not move.
  • If moving long-distance, request written estimates and confirm the mover's USDOT number.

  • 6 weeks out

  • Order packing supplies, or book professional packing services. Not sure what we offer? See our moving services and our full list of service areas across DFW, Austin, and Houston.
  • Begin packing rarely used items (seasonal decor, books, guest room).
  • Measure large furniture against your new home's doorways and elevators.
  • Notify your children's schools and request records transfer if relocating.

  • 4 weeks out

  • File a change of address with USPS.
  • Transfer or set up utilities (electric, water, gas, internet) for your new home.
  • Notify banks, insurance, employer, and subscription services of your new address.
  • Use up freezer and pantry food you do not want to move.

  • 2 weeks out

  • Confirm move date, time, and details with your movers.
  • Reserve elevators and loading docks; request a Certificate of Insurance if your building needs one.
  • Pack non-essentials in earnest; label every box by room and contents.
  • Arrange care for kids and pets on move day.

  • 1 week out

  • Pack a "first night" essentials box: medications, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic tools, snacks.
  • Disassemble what you can, or confirm the crew will handle it.
  • Defrost the refrigerator/freezer.
  • Confirm parking for the truck on both ends.

  • Moving day

  • Be present (or have a representative) to direct the crew and answer questions.
  • Do a final walk-through: closets, cabinets, attic, garage.
  • Keep valuables, documents, and your essentials box with you, not on the truck.
  • Tip the crew if they did a great job (cash is appreciated).

  • After the move

  • Update your driver's license and voter registration.
  • Check your inventory against what arrived.
  • Unpack the essentials box and kitchen first.

  • Need a packing game plan to go with this timeline? Our room-by-room packing guide pairs perfectly, and if you are Texas-bound, do not miss moving to Houston.
